Add or remove GST/HST from an amount at your provincial rate.

Note: some provinces charge PST or QST separately from GST. This tool covers the GST/HST portion only.

Self-employed

Tax set-aside estimator

A simple guide to how much of your self-employment income to park for tax. Adjust the rate to your situation.

Estimate only, not tax advice. Your real rate depends on your total income, province, deductions and instalments. Ask us for a precise number.

Before you rely on these

What these tax calculators do and do not do

These calculators are planning estimates, not a filing position. The GST/HST calculator applies a single rate to a single amount, and the set-aside estimator applies a flat percentage. A real return also considers province, taxable income, CPP, instalments, credits, input tax credits, payroll source deductions and whether you are incorporated.

Use the GST/HST rate for the province where the supply is considered to be made, which is often where your customer is. If you sell across provinces, collect online payments, use Shopify or Amazon, or invoice clients outside Ontario, compare your situation with the GST/HST service page before relying on one quick estimate.

For self-employed income, the tax set-aside can feel high because Canada Pension Plan contributions are part of the calculation. A rough percentage helps you avoid surprises, but your actual figure depends on income level, deductions, instalments, other employment income and whether incorporation would change the plan. If your records are not current, start with bookkeeping before relying on any estimate.

Provincial sales taxes such as PST, RST and QST have their own rules and registration thresholds, so folding them into a quick estimator would give false confidence. If you sell into British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba or Quebec, ask us to review the sales-tax setup with your bookkeeping workflow. For practical prep, use the checklists and FAQ before your call.
